Too Much Scent Is Worse Than None: How to Get the Intensity Right
The right scent level is one people notice as they walk in and forget a few minutes later. If guests comment on how strong it is, or staff start opening doors to let it out, the level is too high. In a business, too much scent is worse than none, because a quiet brand signal turns into a complaint.

Getting it right is not a matter of turning the dial until it smells nice to whoever is standing next to the unit. It depends on the space, the air, the people and the fragrance.
Why overscenting backfires
- It wears on the people who are there all day. Front-of-house staff live with the scent for a whole shift. What feels pleasant for half a minute can feel heavy by the afternoon, and some people are sensitive to strong fragrance.
- It looks like a cover-up. A heavily scented washroom or lobby makes people wonder what is being hidden.
- It flattens the fragrance. At high concentration the subtle parts of a composition disappear, and a carefully chosen scent smells like one loud note.
- It wastes oil. Overscenting simply uses up refills faster.
Why people stop noticing a scent
Our sense of smell adapts. After a few minutes in the same scented space, the brain turns the signal down so it can pick up new smells. This is called olfactory adaptation, and it is why the person setting the level is often the worst judge of it. They have been next to the unit for ten minutes, cannot smell it any more and turn it up. The next guest through the door gets the full dose.
Signs your space is overscented
- Guests or visitors mention the scent's strength, not its character.
- Staff prop doors open or move away from the unit.
- The scent reaches dining or food areas.
- Refills run out sooner than expected.
What decides the right level
Volume and ceiling height. A double-height lobby needs very different output from a 40 m² boutique. The volume of air matters more than floor area.
Airflow and air-conditioning. How often the air is replaced, where supply and return vents sit, and whether scent is delivered through the HVAC all change how it spreads. Most commercial spaces in Jakarta run air-conditioning through opening hours, which carries scent well but also clears it quickly.
Heat, humidity and doors. Jakarta is warm and humid; official statistics for Jakarta Barat record an average humidity of 74% and an average temperature of about 29°C. Where that outdoor air meets a chilled interior, at entrances and shopfronts, scent behaves differently from the middle of the room, and busy doors dilute it every time they open.
Occupancy and time of day. A café at the lunch rush and the same café at opening are different spaces. A good set-up runs on a schedule that follows how the space is used.
The fragrance itself. Some fragrances project more than others. Fresh citrus and green notes tend to feel light; woods, ambers and sweet notes can feel heavy in a small room.
How DuraScent sets the level
- Start low. We begin at a conservative setting and increase in small steps.
- Fresh noses. Levels are checked by people coming in from outside, not by whoever has been standing in the space.
- Different times. We check at busy and quiet periods, morning and evening.
- Zones. Entrances can carry a stronger welcome; reception desks, meeting rooms, food areas and treatment rooms usually need less or none.
- Listen to staff. They are the best early warning, so we agree a simple way to raise concerns before going live.
- Check every month. Each Preventive Maintenance Visit includes a check of the schedule and scent strength, alongside the refill and cleaning.
This is the practical difference between owning a machine and having a managed scenting service.
FAQ
How strong should a business scent be? Noticeable on arrival, unnoticed after a few minutes. If people comment on the strength, it is too high.
Why can't I smell the scent in my own shop any more? That is olfactory adaptation. Your nose has adjusted, not the unit. Ask someone arriving from outside before raising the level.
Should every area have the same level? No. Entrances can take more; desks where staff sit all day, meeting rooms, food areas and treatment rooms usually need less or none.
Does Jakarta's humidity affect intensity? It affects how scent behaves, especially at entrances where warm, humid outdoor air meets air-conditioned interiors. Settings that work mid-room may need adjusting near the doors.
