Scent Is Not an Odour Remover: Why Cleaning and Ventilation Come First
When a space has an unpleasant smell, it's tempting to reach for fragrance. But scent doesn't remove odours; it only adds another smell on top. Understanding that difference helps you deal with the real problem first, and then use scent for what it does well: shaping a pleasant atmosphere in a space that's already clean.

What covering a smell actually does
Covering an odour means adding a stronger, more pleasant fragrance so the unwanted smell is harder to notice. The source of the smell is still there, and so is the odour in the air. The fragrance simply competes with it.
Why it backfires
- The smell comes back. When the fragrance fades, the original odour returns.
- The mix can be worse. Fragrance and odour can blend into a heavy, artificial smell that's less pleasant than either.
- People notice. Visitors often sense the smell underneath, and it can make a space feel poorly kept even when it's clean.
- It takes effort without fixing anything. Covering a smell again and again doesn't address the cause.
What deals with odours
Odours are best handled at their source, by the people and systems responsible for the building:
- Cleaning of floors, drains, bins and fabrics on a regular schedule.
- Ventilation and extraction, especially in washrooms, kitchens, salons and changing rooms.
- Waste handling, so rubbish is removed and stored properly.
- Repairs to leaks, damp and blocked drains, which often cause lasting smells in washrooms.
For persistent odours, a cleaning or building-services specialist is the right call.
Where ambient scent fits
Once the air is fresh, ambient scent can add a pleasant, consistent layer that supports your brand and the way people feel in the space. Some areas are better left unscented altogether. In a clean space, a light scent has room to do its job; in a space with an odour problem, it only adds to the confusion.
What this means for your business
- Impressions. A clean, fresh space supports how people see your brand; a covered smell undermines it.
- Comfort. Staff and visitors are more comfortable in air that is genuinely fresh.
- Effort. Fixing the cause once usually takes less effort than covering it every day.
- Scenting results. A chosen scent works best in a neutral space, without an odour to compete with.
How DuraScent approaches it
We provide ambient scenting, not odour removal, and we don't offer odour neutralising. During the free site survey, if an area has an odour issue, we'll say so and recommend dealing with the cause first, and we may suggest leaving that area unscented until it's resolved. Where the air is fresh, we recommend a scent from our Scent Library of 40+ fragrances from European fragrance houses, and you can try it free for 3 days.
Ambient scent supports atmosphere. It doesn't replace cleaning or ventilation.
