Scent in the Office: A Better Welcome for Visitors and a More Pleasant Place to Work
An office says a lot about a company before anyone speaks. Visitors notice the reception, the meeting room and the corridor on the way. Staff notice the space every day. A light, consistent scent is a simple way to make an office feel more polished for guests and more pleasant for the people who work there.

What research says about pleasant workplaces
In a laboratory study, participants who worked in a room with a pleasant scent set themselves higher work goals than those in an unscented room[1]. It was one study in a controlled setting, so it isn't a promise about productivity or focus in any particular office. It does support a sensible idea: a pleasant environment can put people in a better frame of mind.
Where scent works in an office
Lobby and reception.
The first impression for clients, candidates and partners. This is usually where the scent leads.
Meeting rooms.
A soft, clean scent can make a meeting room feel fresh between back-to-back sessions. Keep it light, because people sit close together for long periods.
Lounges and pantries.
A light scent in the lounge is fine, but keep the pantry itself unscented if people eat there.
Washrooms.
A fresh scent supports a clean washroom. It doesn't replace cleaning or ventilation.
Open-plan desks.
Usually best left unscented or very light. People sit at their desks all day, and their noses adapt to the scent, so what feels faint to them can still be noticeable to others.
Choosing an office scent
- Fresh and clean scents suit most receptions and meeting rooms.
- Light woody scents can suit a premium or traditional brand.
- Avoid heavy, sweet scents in shared spaces where people spend hours.
Ask staff for feedback during the trial. Some people are sensitive to fragrance, and a clear way to raise concerns matters.
Coworking and multi-floor offices
Coworking spaces and companies on several floors benefit from the same scent in every reception, so the space feels consistent. For large lobbies in office towers, HVAC scenting can spread the fragrance evenly, with approval from building management.
How DuraScent helps offices
We survey your office, recommend placement and a scent from our Scent Library of 40+ fragrances from European fragrance houses, and let you try it free for 3 days. The schedule follows office hours, 10 hours a day by default, so the scent isn't running when nobody's there. Our team takes care of refills and maintenance with a monthly Preventive Maintenance Visit, where the intensity is also reviewed if anyone finds the scent too strong.
Scent supports atmosphere and impressions. It isn't a guarantee of higher productivity, and it doesn't replace cleaning or good ventilation.
