Scent Diffusers for Business: Why Coverage, Oil and Care Matter More Than the Machine
When a business owner starts looking into scent, the first question is usually "which machine should I buy?" It is the wrong starting point. In a commercial space, the result depends far less on the brand of the device than on three things around it: whether it can fill your volume of air evenly, whether the fragrance oil is made for it, and who looks after it every month. Most scent programmes that disappoint fail on one of those three.

That is why DuraScent does not sell machines. As a managed service, we choose the technology for your space and take responsibility for how it smells. This guide explains the options so you know what we are weighing up.
The main technologies
- Cold-air diffusion (nebulizing). Compressed air breaks fragrance oil into a dry, very fine mist, with no water and no heat. This is the standard for business spaces, from compact units to systems connected to the air-conditioning.
- Ultrasonic. A vibrating plate turns water and oil into a visible mist. Pleasant at home, but the water dilutes the scent, adds moisture and covers only a small area.
- Heat. Warming the oil releases fragrance, but heat changes how a scent smells, because the lighter notes evaporate first.
- Fan and pad. Air is blown across a scented pad. Simple and cheap, with little control, and output fades as the pad dries.
- Reeds. Decorative and passive. Fine for a desk or washroom shelf, not for scenting a whole space.
What really decides the result
Coverage is about air, not floor area. Coverage is usually quoted in square metres, but what counts is the volume of air and how it moves. A high-ceilinged lobby with doors opening all day needs far more than its floor area suggests. Large, open spaces are often best served through the HVAC system.
The oil has to suit the technology. Cold-air diffusion needs fragrance made for it, at a viscosity that atomises cleanly. Cheap oils block nozzles and smell flat. Our fragrances come from European fragrance houses and are the same formula on every refill.
Control. A good set-up runs on a schedule by hour and day, with output adjusted per zone. Without it, a building is scented all night while empty, and the reception desk gets too much.
Care. Nozzles clog, pumps wear and oil runs out. Someone has to refill, clean and recheck the settings on a schedule. If that someone is your team, their time is part of the cost.
Owning a machine vs a managed service
Owning a machine means you also own the oil supply, spare parts, cleaning and the job of getting the level right. A managed service puts the unit, fragrance, installation and ongoing care into one monthly fee, with one party responsible for the result. DuraScent's managed service starts from Rp300,000 per unit per month, all-in: fragrance oil, refills and a monthly Preventive Maintenance Visit for refill, cleaning and a check of the schedule and scent strength. Larger units run from Rp450,000 to Rp1.4 million per month, and HVAC scenting starts from Rp5.5 million. Contracts are 6, 12, 24 or 60 months, and every programme starts with a free 3-day trial with no commitment.
Questions worth asking any scenting provider
- Where does the fragrance come from, and is it the same formula every time?
- Will you survey the space on site, including airflow?
- How are the schedule and output set per zone?
- What does each maintenance visit include, and how often does it happen?
- What happens if the scent is too strong or too weak?
- What contract lengths are available?
FAQ
What is the best scent technology for a business? For most commercial spaces, cold-air diffusion sized to the volume of air, with oil made for it and regular care. Large spaces often need an HVAC connection. DuraScent decides this after a site survey.
Can a home diffuser work in a shop or office? In a very small room, perhaps. Home devices rarely have the output, control or durability to scent a business space evenly every day.
Do scent diffusers clean the air? No. A diffuser adds fragrance; it does not clean the air or remove odours. Good ventilation and cleaning come first.
